BCI Pipeline Report: Australia (Q1 2024)

Information utilised in the BCI Pipeline Report Australia Q1 2024 is current as of 1 April 2024.

About the BCI Pipeline Report

The BCI Pipeline Report provides quarterly leading indicators of the value of new construction projects in their early stages (from competition to documentation). It is an essential source of construction information for any organisation or individual connected or concerned with the future of the construction industry in Australia.

The BCI Pipeline Report offers more than just a general view of the construction market by revealing specific trends at regional and category levels.

The Pipeline data is based on projects reported on a daily basis in BCI’s real-time project lead database, LeadManager. For the past nine quarters all projects at Concept or Design & Documentation stage were extracted from the database by publishing date. Only new projects in Australia (projects reported for the first time) are included. The aggregate value of the projects is then established by quarter.

Total early-stage projects in Australia are benefitting from the prospects in both the building and civil sectors. The rebound is emphasized in the civil sector, where the quarterly change is at 19% and the annual comparison has reached more than 60%. The momentum seen in the industry is a positive development despite the economy’s slower growth.

The increase in the generation of new projects can be seen in most states especially in NSW. In contrast, QLD’s performance is declining, brought about by a sudden drop in civil values. Overall, NSW remains the biggest contributor in terms of project values and project numbers. QLD comes second in terms of project values by state, and it is VIC that is second in line for project numbers.

Civil early-stage developments make up around 48% of total early-stage projects, contributing significantly to the stellar performance this quarter. The major contributors raising the bar for the sector are the states of NSW and QLD. A significant portion of this investment comes from our headline project, the AUS$20Bn Melbourne to Brisbane High Speed Rail Network – Sydney to Newcastle Section (PID 341206017) in NSW from the infrastructure sector, and the AUS$3.9Bn Bungaban Wind Energy Project (PID 339295017) in QLD from the utilities sector.

Other noteworthy projects include the AUS$1.65Bn Upper Calliope Solar Farm (1.1GW) (PID 336219017) in QLD, the AUS$1.5Bn Mallee Wind Farm (PID 340498017) in NSW, and the AUS$1Bn Piambong Wind Farm (PID 340471017) also in NSW. These projects are a testament to the growing clean energy sources that are prioritized in the country.
