BCI’s Education Sector Snapshot report in Australia captures the total number and value of active projects across the country, as of July 2024.   

As reported by BCI, over the last five years there has been a steady increase in not only the number of design applications submitted for education construction projects in Australia but also in the number of applications approved. Notably, between 2022 and 2023, there was a 27.27% increase in design applications submitted. Additionally, there was a 10.04% increase in the number of construction commencements. 

Analysis on the Education Sector in Australia 2024 

Australia’s education sector has 4,299 active construction projects totalling just over 54.18 billion AUD. Approximately a third of this total (32.19%) can be attributed to projects at the Concept stage, while 37.88% belongs to Design & Documentation projects, where documentation is in progress and construction certificates are submitted. The highest number of active projects (43.27%) in the education sector can also be found at the Design & Documentation stage.   

Looking at the projects broken down by state, we can see that there are a similar number of projects in NSW/ACT (1,469) and VIC/TAS/SA (1,584), both with total project values of over $20 billion. While QLD/NT/Other Territories have a relatively high 873 active education projects, these projects total just shy of $7.1 billion.
