BCI’s Healthcare Construction Sector Snapshot report in New Zealand captures the total number and value of active projects across the country, as of August 2024. 

Healthcare Construction Projects Breakdown   

As reported by BCI, the health sector is showing signs of growth: the number of design applications approved for healthcare construction has steadily increased since 2022, with an 11.27% change in the last year alone. Additionally, construction commencements have also increased with a 38.54% growth since 2023. 

New Zealand’s health sector has 330 active construction projects totalling just over 11.66 billion NZD. This total value is quite evenly spread across projects in the early stages of construction, with 36.07% attributed to Concept stage projects, and 35.92% attributed to Design & Documentation projects. Additionally, the highest number of healthcare construction projects (145) can also be found at the Design & Documentation stage, where plans are in progress and applications are being submitted for approval. 

Looking at the projects broken down by region, it is interesting to note that while the Northern Region has the highest number of projects (141), it has the lowest total value of projects (just shy of 3.74 billion NZD). The Southern Region of New Zealand, despite having 40 fewer projects than its northern counterpart, has a total project value of just over 4.18 billion NZD.
