Healthcare Construction Sector Snapshot Report in Australia 2024
BCI’s Healthcare Construction Sector Snapshot report in Australia captures the total number and value of active projects across the country, as of August 2024.
Projects in the Healthcare Construction Industry
As reported by BCI, between 2022 and 2023 there was not only an increase in the number of applications approved for healthcare construction projects (67.59%), but also an increase in the number of main contractors being appointed to projects in this sector (38.59%), and a rise in the number of construction commencements (28.04%). These figures appear to have taken a very slight downward turn over the last year but the volume of projects achieving these milestones has remained high.
Australia’s health sector has 1,606 active construction projects totalling just over 58.81 billion AUD. Almost half (49.38%) of the total number can be attributed to projects at the Design & Documentation stage, where development applications are being submitted, and construction certificates are being approved. On the other hand, just over 40% of the total value of healthcare construction projects can be attributed to Concept stage projects.
Looking at the projects broken down by state, we can see that NSW/ACT and VIC/TAS/SA have very similar total project values at 24.70 billion AUD and 24.43 billion respectively. Despite the similarity in value, NSW/ACT has almost 200 fewer projects than VIC/TAS/SA. In fact, the number of projects in NSW/ACT more closely resemble the number of projects in QLD/NT/Other Territories (419), but these projects only total approximately 4.79 billion AUD.
