BCI’s Education Sector Snapshot report in New Zealand captures the total number and value of active projects across the country, as of July 2024.   

As reported by BCI, between 2022 and 2023, there was a notable increase in the number of design applications submitted (40.65%) for education projects, the number of applications approved (41.78%), and the number of construction commencements (an impressive 121.66%). In the last year, while the number of design approvals has continued to rise, the number of applications submitted has significantly dropped (-19.06%). 

Analysis in Education Sector New Zealand 2024 

New Zealand’s education sector has 1,641 active construction projects totalling just over 4.29 billion NZD. Almost half of the total number of projects (48.93%) are at the Pre-Construction stage, where tenders are called, and contracts are awarded. Meanwhile, the total value of active education construction projects is quite evenly spread across all stages of the project lifecycle, from Concept through to Construction. 

Looking at the projects broken down by region, we can see that the Northern Region has not only the highest number of projects (857), but the greatest total value of projects at just over 2.64 billion NZD. Despite the Central Region having the second highest number of projects (446), these education projects total just 584.47 million NZD.
